NEW CPD TOOL WILL RAISE IC'S PROFILE

The only continuous professional development (CPD) programme dedicated to internal comms has launched to help practitioners further their careers and demonstrate the credibility of the profession.

Members can use CPD to help them be the best they can be in their roles and, in doing so, show leaders and businesses the real power of internal comms.

IoIC’s new online CPD tool will play a key role in raising the profile of internal communication by providing a framework for professionals to plan their career goals and development needs, track progress and reflect on what they’ve learned. Those who complete the programme will receive a CPD certificate and there is the potential to go on to achieve IoIC accredited status, validating their knowledge and competence within the internal comms industry. 

“As the only independent internal communication body, we are dedicated to driving the profession forward and highlighting the impact of IC on organisational success,” says IoIC chief executive Jennifer Sproul. “Our members can use CPD to help them be the best they can be in their roles and, in doing so, show leaders the real power of internal comms.”

The launch of the CPD programme comes as IoIC is developing its profession map and a detailed competency framework, which together will define the skills and behaviours needed to create informed, engaged and connected workforces.

“This CPD programme is the only one out there dedicated to improving skills and knowledge specific to internal communication,” says Jennifer. “It’s a way to identify where you are in your career and what you want to achieve – and then plan how to get there. It links practice into learning, and it can easily be embedded into the routine of your professional life. In gaining accredited status, members on the CPD programme show the unique skills and knowledge IC professionals bring to an organisation.”

 

Logging hours of comms activity

Free to IoIC members, the institute’s CPD is managed through a portal where participants create their own personal development plan, and record and review the activities that help them maintain and develop their skills.

Participants need to log, and reflect upon, 32 CPD hours across informal and formal activities. Many opportunities for building up hours – training courses, conferences, events – can be found on the IoIC website or through regional IoIC networks. Just reading membership content, including Voice, counts.

“As long as it’s relevant to the practice of internal communication and about developing your own career, or helping someone else’s, you can probably count it as CPD,” says Jennifer. “You are likely to be participating in learning and development activities that could contribute to your CPD without realising it.”

It’s about investing in yourself, concludes Jennifer: “It will help ensure your knowledge and skills are up to date, prepare you to take on fresh challenges and, ultimately, make you stand out from the crowd.”
